Those are normal numbers.  Only your DR can truly say but IMHO if I had those numbers without meds I would not be taking any.  Of course that could change so testing is important. As to the Mexican Restaurant I would suggest Fajitas without the tortilla. (the veggies and meat)

I use a different monitor but it took me awhile to get it right. I try going back down the finger a little. Don’t squeeze right at where you punched the hole but from the base of the finger out kind of like milking the finger. Welcome to the group, sorry you are qualified to join. Try not to get discouraged, if you blow it, get back together. Damage can sneak up on you. Don’t let yourself slide until something happens to grab your attention. Many people are careful in the beginning, then let themselves go and then regret it when they get a serious complication to grab their attention. Don’t do what I did. This is a good supportive group, ignore any people who get negative, we all go through rough times and sometimes people take it out on someone in the group. I felt ignored for a long time and wanted some more of the regulars to give me attention, then I realized I can give attention to others. the regulars talk a lot to each other. But there are a lot of knowledgeable people about this disease and have taught me a lot. Tony in Mexico 7 years type II  lots of medicine

Get the Fajita Platter without the tortillas.  No beans or rice. That’s what I eat… the meat, veggies, guacamole and sourcream. Your bgs are completely non diabetic numbers if you are not taking meds. To test and get enough blood, washing your hands with warm water to get the blood moving and I find if I test in the fattest part of the finger I have more than enough blood. Loretta Say what you mean and mean what you say

Response:

I seldom go to the Mexican restaurants since being diagnosed diabetic, but I find that the chicken fajitas are easier on the bg levels than other entrees.  I don’t eat the chips and salsa that they bring to the table to snack on while you wait for your entree. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >I am a newbie, diagnosed with high blood sugar a week ago, still >waiting for results to come back from latest test. >meanwhile, I am following Dr. Bernstein’s diet, and testing my blood as >soon as I wake up in the morning, and 2 hours after each meal. >Qustion 1:  I have tested three times in a row this morning, and each >time it said, "not enough blood" Arrgh!!! Those numbers would be pretty good for me, I would be starving to have them actually. FastTake meters use a very small amount of blood, are small and very handy. One Touch meters use alot of blood and take much longer to read. Probably you are just not allowing that blood drop to grow big enough. Milk your finger a bit with a gentle squeeze. Either than or you are actually touching the strip?  That thins the blood. You are supposed to let the drop touch and then the stip grabs the blood but your skin doesn’t touch. I have 2 fingers that I always get not enough blood readings even if its a big blob of blood. I just don’t use that finger. Try to determine if there’s a pattern to which sites are getting those readings.

I eat in a Mexican restaurant often. The plantain was your problem. Its a very starchy food related to a banana. When I eat at La Mex I share half a quesadilla with my husband. I have tacos a la carte without rice or beans, or a taco salad in a shell and don’t eat the tortilla shell. I drink water, club soda, or a diet beverage I carry in my purse. The management doesn’t mind. Lots of diabetics work there.  I would have their dinner salad but its the size of a turkey platter. Carol

Response:

Thanks so much everybody, for the help and the moral support. Those numbers are without medication, but with the restricted carb diet. The one night I ate a chile relleno and fried plaintains, my Bg was 191 2 hours after eating, and 162 upon waking up before eating anything the next morning.  So the restricted carb diet is working for me!. I just  pigged out at the Shoneys salad bar, ate a huge plate of salad and dressing, with egg, and then two huge plates of their spinach and green beans, and a tablespoon of chili. My Bg’s 2 hours later are 83! Whoopeee. On the downside, I got back my test results from before I started the diet (Thurs morning), and my fasting Bg was 213, and glyc. hem. was 8.4 The nurse said I must come in as soon as possible (which will be Thurs) I guess the doc (internist) will put me on meds based on that. I made an appt with an endocrinologist for 11/27 (the soonest I was able to get) I am definitely going to get one of the meters recomended here as soon as I get the prescription. For my last Bg reading I had to do it 5 times!!  I know I will get discouraged and want to stop testing if that keeps up. You are a great group.  I feel a lot better because of all of your replies to me.  Before that I felt very much alone, and depressed. Thank you again! Rightclicker Before you buy.

Yeah. These don’t bother my bg either so long as I’m good about avoiding those 3 zillion carbs in the free all you can eat chips before the meal. Carol

There is always the old "just don’t eat it all". And when I am low enough at La Mex to order a meal and get some rice too I am always specific that I am a diabetic and I don’t want more than half a cup of rice on my plate because it will go in the garbage. And by doing so I usualy only get twice that much, one cup instead of 3 or 4. I have found looking at the senior and kiddie meals is a good idea. And also just ordering appetizers. In a lot of rertaurants, the appetizer is more than enough for a meal. Carol

I lurked here for months before I finally posted to the group.  I was terrified, mainly because I saw so many fights here.  But it has tamed down quite a bit.  Heck, my first post to MHD spurred a flame war (and it was between a couple of the regulars at that!) and I thought that was my initiation. ~soft laugh~ Sometimes I just enjoy reading the posts without making any comments of my own.  Some days I just need a little support.  Sometimes I have a simple question.  I have even posted my own success with my Bgs here…and my failures.  I imagine we all have good and bad days.  Sometimes I have been pleasantly surprised at the responses I have received.  Every now and then you get a touching email or response that makes all the sense in the world – maybe it’s a regular, or maybe it’s someone you’ve never even seen on the board before.  Either way, I believe we all have something to contribute here – or else we wouldn’t be here. One day, I hope to be able to help the others here as they have helped me. — Kristin 29 PCOS T2 —

I am a newbie, diagnosed with high blood sugar a week ago, still waiting for results to come back from latest test. meanwhile, I am following Dr. Bernstein’s diet, and testing my blood as soon as I wake up in the morning, and 2 hours after each meal. Qustion 1:  I have tested three times in a row this morning, and each time it said, "not enough blood" Arrgh!!! I am taking a break here to ask for help with this!. I test in the area of fingers recommended by Dr. Bernstein in his book. How can I get enough blood? What am I doing wrong? I am using a One Touch II  meter. is there a meter that requires less blood? Question 2:  My blood sugars since Friday have been around 120 on waking up, and usually 97 after lunch but higher after brakfast and dinner, like 114 or 119 . Does it seem like these bg’s are low enough for me not to need medication? I have been very strict with my restricted carb diet (as per Dr. Bernstein’s) http://www.diabetes-normalsugars.com/readit/chapter10-2.shtml Question 3:  What can I eat in a Mexican restaurant?  I had a chile relleno and plaintains last week and bg’s were 191 – can’t eat that anymore….. I haven’t used that one, but I started with the One Touch Profile and had that same problem.  FastTake uses LOTS less.  So does Freestyle (which I haven’t used yet) from www.therasense.com I try to warm up my fingers if possible.  Sometimes I suck on the finger when I don’t have a warm water faucet around.  I always "milk" my finger too. >Question 2:  My blood sugars since Friday have been around 120 on >waking up, and usually 97 after lunch but higher after brakfast and >dinner, like 114 or 119 . >Does it seem like these bg’s are low enough for me not to need >medication?

I don’t konw, they may not stay that low when you go off the meds. I saw someone in this group (I think it was Carol) suggest eating the fillings of things, but not the wrapper.  Taco salad is good too (unless they put strips of tortilla chips mixed in with the lettuce, of course). — dx as Type 1 in Mar 00, H & L MDI "I’d rather be loved by only me,     than create a facade and be loved by no one." — wombn "Never give up", Winston Churchill www.mindspring.com/~wombn
